Discovery of Submerged Continent Off Northern Australia: “Australian Atlantis”
A submerged continent, nearly twice the size of the UK, has been discovered off the coast of northern Australia. Around 70,000 years ago, this vast landmass was home to up to half a million people and is now submerged about 100 meters deep. Referred to as the “Australian Atlantis,” it was a large continental shelf connecting the regions of Kimberley and Arnhem Land when above sea level. The continent supported a single cultural zone, with inhabitants speaking similar languages and creating rock art akin to surrounding areas. Rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age forced the population to retreat as the continent drowned.
Key Points:
- Submerged continent off northern Australia discovered.
- Approximately twice the size of the UK.
- Inhabited around 70,000 years ago by up to half a million people.
- Referred to as “Australian Atlantis.”
- Connected Kimberley and Arnhem Land when above sea level.
- Supported a single cultural zone with common language and rock art.
- Population estimated to have peaked during the last ice age.
- Rising sea levels at the end of the ice age led to the continent’s submersion.
- Researchers used ecological modeling and projected past sea levels onto high-resolution maps to draw conclusions.
- Oral histories of First Nations people also reflect the drowning of the landscape.
This discovery sheds light on the ecological and cultural aspects of the ancient continent, offering insights into the human population, language, and art of the region.
