At least 22 people were killed and 16 others injured in a tragic collision between a bus and a truck on a highway in the Bolivian Andes, Al Jazeera reported, citing police sources. Among the deceased, the identities of 14 individuals have been confirmed, including a Chilean national, according to Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The fatal accident took place on the road connecting the Bolivian town of Patacamaya to Tambo Quemado in northern Chile. The bus was traveling along this popular route towards Chile when the incident occurred. Traffic officer Nilo Torrico indicated that the preliminary investigation revealed that the truck entered the wrong lane while attempting to overtake another vehicle, leading to the collision. “This truck made a prohibited manoeuvre and, as a result, we have this unfortunate accident,” Torrico said.
First responders are currently working to extricate bodies from the wrecked vehicles, highlighting the severity of the crash. This accident adds to Bolivia’s troubling road safety record, with government statistics showing that the country witnesses about 1,400 traffic deaths annually. These accidents are frequently attributed to poor driving and mechanical failures.
The incident underscores the critical need for stringent traffic regulations and better enforcement to prevent such tragedies. As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on supporting the injured and the families of those who lost their lives in this devastating event.
