
BRO to Build World’s Highest Fighter Airfield in Ladakh image/NDTV
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is set to construct the world’s highest fighter airfield in the Nyoma region of Ladakh. The foundation stone for this historic project will be laid by India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, on September 12, 2023, at Devak Bridge.
A Remarkable Engineering Feat
BRO, known for its expertise in constructing vital infrastructure in challenging terrains, announced this significant undertaking via its official Twitter account. The project involves the construction of the world’s highest fighter airfield, showcasing India’s commitment to enhancing its border infrastructure.
Infrastructure Development Along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)
The BRO chief, Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry, emphasized that India is proactively working to develop infrastructure along the 3,488-kilometer stretch of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He noted that India’s approach to infrastructure development along the LAC has become more assertive in recent years. This transformational shift is supported by the Indian government, which has allocated substantial budgets and resources to accelerate infrastructure projects along the border.
Comparison with Past Governments
Lt Gen Chaudhry compared the current government’s approach to infrastructure development with previous administrations. He acknowledged that China had initiated infrastructure development along the LAC earlier than India did. However, in recent years, the Indian government has significantly increased its budget allocation for border infrastructure projects, reaching approximately Rs 12,340 crore in the last year. This funding is vital for ensuring the rapid progress of critical infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening India’s border regions.
Boosting National Security and Connectivity
The construction of the world’s highest fighter airfield in Ladakh underscores India’s commitment to national security and connectivity. Such projects not only enhance the defense capabilities of the region but also contribute to improved connectivity and accessibility for remote areas.
