Assam Advances Toward Uniform Civil Code, Plans Repeal of Muslim Marriage Act
Just under three weeks following Uttarakhand’s pioneering move to enact legislation for a Uniform Civil Code, Assam is now taking its initial strides toward a comparable law. The decision involves the repeal of the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, as announced by Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on Friday. The cabinet has endorsed this decision, and there are indications that a bill may be presented in the ongoing session of the Assam Assembly, scheduled until February 28.
