In a surprising move, Alibaba Group has revealed a change in leadership within its cloud business unit. Daniel Zhang, who was previously serving concurrently in multiple roles, including as group CEO and head of the cloud unit, is stepping down from his position in the cloud division. This decision comes just two months after it was announced that Zhang would be leaving his roles as group CEO and chairman to focus on the cloud business.
Transition to Eddie Wu as CEO of the Cloud Business
As part of the scheduled changes, Zhang has officially handed over the role of group CEO to Eddie Wu. In addition to taking on the responsibilities of group CEO, Wu will also lead the cloud business following Zhang’s departure. Alibaba issued a statement confirming these leadership changes.
Restructuring and Focus on Cloud
Alibaba initiated a significant restructuring plan in March, dividing the company into six distinct units, each with its own boards and CEOs. The cloud business is a key component of this restructuring effort. In May, Alibaba announced its intention to complete the public listing of its cloud unit within the next year. The company reiterated its commitment to executing this spin-off plan under the supervision of a newly appointed management team.
Daniel Zhang’s Transition
Alibaba clarified that Daniel Zhang expressed his desire to transition away from his role as the chairman and CEO of the Cloud Intelligence Group. The company’s board respected Zhang’s decision and appointed Eddie Wu as the acting chairman and CEO of the Cloud Intelligence Group with immediate effect. Zhang will continue to contribute to Alibaba by leveraging his expertise in different capacities.
Investment in Technology Fund
Alibaba also disclosed plans to invest $1 billion in a technology fund that Daniel Zhang will establish. This fund aims to support Alibaba’s strategy of investing in future growth and further developing its technology ecosystem.
These leadership changes in Alibaba’s cloud business reflect the company’s commitment to the growing importance of cloud services and technology in its overall business strategy.
