AAP MLA Mehraj Malik; Released From Jail After J&k High Court Quashes PSA Detention
DODA, Apr 28 (VoM News): The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has quashed the detention of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act, leading to his release on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The court set aside the detention order on Monday while hearing a habeas corpus petition that challenged his preventive detention. The matter had been argued over multiple hearings, with the bench reserving its judgment on February 23.
Officials confirmed that Malik was released after completion of legal formalities. Sources said the release will remain in effect unless he is required in connection with any other case.
Malik, who represents Doda and also heads the AAP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit, had been detained on September 8, 2025. Authorities had invoked the Public Safety Act, alleging activities prejudicial to public order.
The detention order cited claims of continued unlawful conduct and alleged inflammatory remarks, including tensions linked to protests over the relocation of a health centre and disputes with the local administration.
The court’s ruling effectively nullifies the preventive detention, though detailed reasons for the decision were not immediately available.
