Home Ministry Amends Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025
NEW DELHI, JUNE 02, 2026 [VoM News]: In a major update, the Ministry of Home Affairs has amended the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, making significant changes related to registration requirements for foreign nationals residing or staying in India beyond 180 days.
The revised rules state that foreigners entering Indian territory on visas valid for 180 days or less must register themselves any time before the completion of the permitted period if they intend to extend their stay.
Earlier, the rules stated that foreign nationals were required to register within 14 days after the completion of 180 days from their arrival in India.
This means that if a visitor wishes to stay in India for a longer period, they must now register before the completion of the 180-day period.
As per the notification, permission for an extended stay beyond this period will only be granted under emergent circumstances.
Meanwhile, the government has also relaxed certain provisions concerning children born in India to foreign nationals.
Earlier, parents were required to register with the authorities within 30 days of the child’s birth through the portal if exit permissions or visa-related services were required.
Now, under the revised rules, this requirement will not apply where either parent is an Indian citizen and wishes to retain Indian citizenship for the child.
However, if later the child acquires citizenship of another country while residing in India, the parents must inform the registration officer within 30 days of the change in nationality.
