India Makes Royal Entry, Approves First 10-Car Hydrogen-Powered Trainset

India Makes Royal Entry, Approves First 10-Car Hydrogen-Powered Trainset

NEW DELHI, MAY 28, 2026 [VoM News]: India has approved its first hydrogen-powered 10-car trainset, marking the nation’s entry into a select group of countries exploring hydrogen-based rail systems.

India has joined the list of nations including Germany, Japan, China and the United States, marking a major step towards clean and sustainable transportation.

As per details available with VoM News, the upcoming trainset will run using a 1,200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and will likely operate at a top speed of 75 kmph.

The major advantage of hydrogen fuel cell technology is that it generates electricity through a chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen, releasing water vapour as the only emission, making it environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly.

As India is aligned with the broader concept of clean energy and carbon reduction targets, this step would strengthen the vision of a sustainable and eco-friendly environment.

A hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established at Jind with approvals from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, while Indian Railways has also introduced strict safety protocols due to the advanced nature of the technology.
