Possible Ice Signals Detected by ISRO Beneath Moon’s Surface Using Chandrayaan-2 Data
NEW DELHI, MAY 28, 2026 [VoM News]: A possible presence of subsurface ice has been evidenced by ISRO’s Chandrayaan-2 orbiter in the south polar region of the Moon.
The orbiter’s Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR), which is an advanced microwave imaging instrument used to study the lunar surface, played a key role in the discovery.
As per details, scientists analysed radar signals from these regions and identified patterns that may indicate ice deposits buried beneath the lunar surface.
Researchers said that strong signs of underground ice were detected in the studied areas, indicating the possible genuineness of ice signatures rather than surface roughness.
According to ISRO, this discovery holds great significance for future lunar exploration missions.
