India Imposes Ban on Sugar Exports

    India Imposes Ban on Sugar Exports

    NEW DELHI, MAY 14, 2026 [VoM News]: In another move, the Indian government has imposed a ban on sugar exports with immediate effect, which will remain in force until further orders.

    In a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, the DGFT said that the export status of raw sugar, white sugar, and refined sugar has been changed from “restricted” to “prohibited”.

    Certain categories have been exempted, including sugar exports to the European Union and the United States under tariff rate quota arrangements, shipments made under the advance authorisation scheme, government-to-government export agreements, and consignments already in the export pipeline before the notification.

    Earlier to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed citizen during his adress to stop buying gold for a year, work from home, prefer organic farming over the chemical substances, and avoid foreign travels.
