China Navy Video Fuels Speculation Over Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier
BEIJING, Apr 26 (VoM News): A new promotional video released by the People’s Liberation Army Navy has sparked fresh speculation that China may be developing its first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, as it pushes to expand its blue-water naval capabilities.
The film, titled “Into The Deep,” was unveiled on Wednesday to mark the navy’s 77th anniversary. It showcases China’s evolution from coastal defence to long-range maritime operations, featuring drills in the western Pacific and advanced naval systems.
One segment in the video has drawn particular attention. It shows a symbolic handover of a compass between naval officers named after China’s three existing carriers namely Liaoning, Shandong, and Fujian, along with a fourth name, “He Jian.” Analysts say the term could hint at a nuclear-powered vessel, as “He” sounds similar to the Chinese word for nuclear.
While Beijing has not officially confirmed the development, satellite imagery in recent years has shown a large warship under construction at a shipyard in Dalian. Reports suggest the vessel could be comparable in size to the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, raising questions about its propulsion system.
Additional images have reportedly indicated structures resembling nuclear reactor containment units, further fuelling speculation.
China commissioned its third aircraft carrier, Fujian, in 2025. It is equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system, similar to that used on the USS Gerald R. Ford, marking a major technological leap.
All three of China’s current carriers are conventionally powered. However, a nuclear-powered platform would significantly extend operational range and endurance, allowing sustained deployments far from home waters.
The development comes amid rising maritime competition with the United States and growing Chinese naval activity in regions such as the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. Analysts say a nuclear carrier would strengthen Beijing’s ability to project power globally and operate across key trade routes.
