Houthi PM Ahmed al-Rahawi Killed in Israeli Strike
Ahmed al-Rahawi, Prime Minister of the Houthi-led government in Yemen, was killed on Thursday in an Israeli airstrike on the capital, Sanaa. The attack also claimed the lives of several other ministers from the Houthi administration, according to Reuters report.
A statement issued by the rebel group, as per AP confirmed al-Rahawi’s death, describing the strike as part of an ongoing campaign to disrupt their governance.
The Israeli military confirmed it carried out a “precise strike” on a Houthi military target in the Sanaa region. The strike occurred during a routine government workshop focused on evaluating the group’s activities over the past year.
Al-Rahawi, who had held office since August 2024, was part of the broader leadership targeted by Israel, which has consistently been involved in military actions against the Houthis. The rebels have notably launched multiple missile strikes at Israel throughout Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza, claiming these actions are in solidarity with the Palestinians.
Iranian Rial Plunges as Europe Decides to Reinstate Sanctions
Despite many of the missiles being intercepted or destroyed mid-air by Israel’s defence systems, the attacks have continued unabated. Earlier this week, Israeli airstrikes also hit several locations in Sanaa, resulting in at least 10 deaths and over 100 injuries, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.
In retaliation to the Houthi missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and ships in the Red Sea, Israel and its allies in a US-led coalition have intensified air raids on rebel-controlled areas in Yemen. These strikes have notably included a targeted attack on Sanaa’s airport in May, which has since remained out of service.
A deal brokered by the Trump administration in May sought to end the airstrikes in exchange for the Houthis halting their attacks on shipping. However, the Houthis maintain that the agreement did not extend to halting strikes on targets they view as linked to Israel…. Agencies
