The CCPA Probes 20 IAS Coaching Centers
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) announced on Monday that it has initiated an investigation into 20 IAS coaching centers in India. These coaching centers are being probed for alleged misleading advertisements and unfair trade practices. The primary concern is the use of toppers and successful candidates’ names and pictures in their advertising, which can influence prospective aspirants.
Penalties Imposed
Penalties on Four Coaching Centers
Out of the 20 coaching institutes under investigation, penalties of ₹1 lakh each have been imposed on four centers. These centers include Rau’s IAS Study Circle, Chahal Academy, IQRA IAS, and IAS Baba. The CCPA is taking action to ensure that such practices do not continue.
Notices to Other Coaching Centers
Notices Issued to a Dozen More
Notices have also been issued to twelve other coaching centers, which include Vajirao & Reddy Institute, Khan Study Group IAS, Analog IAS, Sriram’s IAS, and more. These notices were issued in the past 1.5 years for concealing important information about successful students. Investigations into these centers are ongoing.

Importance of Full Disclosure
The CCPA Chairperson, Nidhi Khare, emphasized the importance of full disclosure by coaching centers. Prospective aspirants need to be aware of the courses and the extent of coaching successful students have received. This transparency is crucial to protect the interests of aspiring students, ensuring they don’t waste their time and money on coaching centers with less successful track records.
The CCPA revealed that the coaching industry in India is a significant market with a revenue of approximately ₹58,088 crore. It also noted that about 2 lakh students migrate to Kota in Rajasthan annually for coaching, while Delhi is considered the hub of UPSC-CSE coaching. Proper disclosures, as emphasized by the CCPA, can help reduce deception in this industry.
