BAFTA Awards 2025: 10 Records That Were Broken

    BAFTA Awards 2025: Here is an updated list of records broken at the 78th British Academy Film Awards.

    Mikey Madison (“Anora”) became the first person to win Best Actress in a Leading Role BAFTA during the same night she was also nominated in the Rising Star BAFTA, Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”) broke a record and became the actress with the most nominations in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category without a win while Sean Baker (“Anora”) became the first person to win in the Best Casting category for a movie he also directed.

    BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

    • Mikey Madison (“Anora”) became the first person to win Best Actress in a Leading Role BAFTA during the same night she was also nominated in the Rising Star BAFTA (Madison lost the Rising Star BAFTA to David Jonsson)
    • Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”) broke a record and became the actress with the most nominations in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category without a win – “The Outrun” was Ronan’s 5th nomination following nominations for “The Lovely Bones”, “Brooklyn”, “Lady Bird” & “Little Women” – prior to tonight, Ronan was tied with Deborah Kerr as the actress with the most nominations in the leading actress category without a win since Kerr was nominated 4 times without winning, however, losing on her 5th nomination, Ronan broke out of her tie with Kerr and became the actress with the most nominations without a win in the category

    BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

    • Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) joined Albert Finney & Robert De Niro and became the third actor with 5 or more nominations without a win in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category (since Adrien Brody won) – Finney got 6 nominations without a win while De Niro got 5 nominations and never won (previous nominations of Fiennes are: “English Patient”, “The End of the Affair”, “Constant Gardener” & “The Grand Budapest Hotel”)

    BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

    • Peter Straughan (“Conclave”) became only the second screenwriter to win two times in the Best Adapted Screenplay category at the BAFTAs, joining Christopher Hampton – Straughan previously won in 2012 for co-writing “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” and he won his second trophy tonight for “Conclave”

    BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY 

    • Jesse Eisenberg (“A Real Pain”) became the first BAFTA Rising Star nominee to win in the Best Original Screenplay category – Eisenberg was nominated in the Rising Star category in 2009 (losing to Kristen Stewart) and he won tonight for “A Real Pain”

    BEST FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

    • Jacques Audiard (“Emilia Pérez”) tied the record of Pedro Almodóvar for the most wins in the Best Film Not In The English Language category at the BAFTAs (3 wins) – Audiard previously won in the category for: “A Prophet” & “The Beat That My Heart Skipped” and “Emilia Pérez” is his third win

    BEST CASTING 

    • Sean Baker (“Anora”) became the first person to win in the Best Casting category for a movie he also directed & it also made Baker the first man to win in the Best Casting category since it had only been won by female casting directors since the category’s inception prior to 2025 (Baker won alongside Samantha Quan)

    BEST ANIMATED FILM

    • “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” became the first British movie to win in the Best Animated Film category at the BAFTAs 

    BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN 

    • The award was won by Lee Sandales & Nathan Crowley for “Wicked” – Lee Sandales (“Wicked”) joined a group of 10 production designers who managed to win two or more times in the Best Production Design category at the BAFTAs – Sandales for “1917” and a win for “Wicked” is his second
    • By winning for “Wicked”, Nathan Crowley won after 5 nominations in the Best Production Design category without winning (Crowley was previously nominated for: “First Man”, “Dunkirk”, “Interstellar”, “The Dark Knight” & “Batman Begins”, but he never managed to win until tonight)
