PM Modi to Visit Ukraine on August 23, Reaffirming India’s Support for Peace
Key Highlights:
- PM Modi to visit Ukraine on August 23, marking the first Indian PM visit.
- India reiterates its commitment to peace through dialogue and diplomacy.
- Multiple agreements between India and Ukraine expected during the visit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Ukraine on August 23, following an invitation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This visit will mark the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited the war-torn nation since India and Ukraine established diplomatic relations 30 years ago.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that India’s approach to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict remains grounded in diplomacy and dialogue, as it believes these are the only paths to a lasting resolution.
MEA Secretary (West), Tanmaya Lal, highlighted that the visit will build on recent high-level discussions between India and Ukraine, as well as reaffirm India’s stance on the conflict.
“This visit is a landmark event and a historic moment in our diplomatic relations,” Lal stated during a briefing.
India has maintained strong ties with both Russia and Ukraine, relationships that the MEA insists are independent and not a “zero-sum game.” PM Modi’s visit to Russia last month underscores India’s balanced approach to its partnerships with both nations.
During his Ukraine visit, PM Modi is expected to engage in extensive discussions with President Zelenskyy, focusing on bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Several agreements between the two countries are anticipated.
India has also extended humanitarian aid to Ukraine, delivering 16 packages containing 135 tons of materials, including medicines and power generators. The MEA has confirmed that more initiatives are in the pipeline.
President Zelenskyy’s office confirmed that PM Modi’s visit coincides with Ukraine’s National Flag Day on August 23.
The visit is expected to further strengthen the bilateral relationship and explore avenues for peace in the region.
