The death toll from the flash floods caused by cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 11, following the recovery of two more bodies in Mandi district. Flash floods struck three districts, including Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, on the night of July 31, leading to widespread devastation. Over 40 people remain missing as rescue operations continue.
Authorities recovered the bodies of 23-year-old Sonam and a three-month-old infant named Manvi from Rajbhan village in Mandi’s Padhar area. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate those still unaccounted for.
The ongoing efforts involve 410 personnel from various agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Himachal Pradesh Police, and home guards. Specialized equipment, such as drones and sniffer dogs, is being employed in the search.
In Samej village, located in the Gram panchayat of Sarpara in Shimla’s Rampur subdivision, over 30 people remain missing.
The rescue operation has intensified as more machinery has been deployed, and the reduced water flow has allowed access to previously unreachable areas.
The state government has announced immediate relief measures, including a payment of Rs 50,000 to the victims’ families.
Additionally, those affected will receive Rs 5,000 per month for rent over the next three months, along with essential supplies such as gas and food.
Since the onset of the monsoon on June 27, Himachal Pradesh has suffered significant losses, with 79 lives claimed in rain-related incidents and damages amounting to Rs 662 crore.
