Iran Blacklists Indian Ships Maha Roos, Disha Among 45 Vessels Over Strait of Hormuz Violations
New Delhi: August 26, 2026 [VoM News]: Iran has prohibited the movement of at least one vessel linked to entities operating in India, adding the bulk carrier Maha Roos to the list of 45 ships blacklisted as ‘non-compliant’ for allegedly violating Iranian transit rules.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) declared these blacklisted vessels, like Maha Roos, prone to further limitations through Strait of Hormuz transit, and possibly even fines, seizure and confiscation. The authority warned of similar risks, including prohibition of passage for other ships cooperating with the prohibited vessels.
According to PGSA, ships wishing to be removed from the list will have to obtain the right status with formal submissions.
Analysis of maritime ownership and tracking data discovered that many vessels in the list were connected with companies based in United Arab Emirates, others have affiliations with Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Malta, Singapore and one is even registered in Pakistan (Mardan, crude oil tanker).
This action occurs in the midst of rising concern regarding ships traversing through this major shipping lane: Strait of Hormuz, the worlds most vital artery, for fuel and oil transportation.
Maritime tracking data verified the crossing of the Strait by 39 vessels from the total of 45, at least once from early March, with multiple passages, one tanker (Al Bahyah) actually making it’s way through the strait 12 times. It was discovered that almost 14 of these ships were reported damage during incidents surrounding the Strait, resulting from Middle Eastern crisis. UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed the instances, calling them attacks, while International Maritime Organization and several witnesses also confirmed that such accidents had indeed occurred without assigning the cause as of now.
Iran has, as reported, been directing more of the sea lane into more northerly part of Strait of Hormuz whereas still ships are using parts designated as non-compliant.
