Canada PM Mark Carney Rejects US Trade Deal, Vows Dollar-for-Dollar Tariff Retaliation
Ottawa, Aug. 23, 2026: The Great White North is pulling no punches when it comes to its trade relationship with the U.S. Today, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly rejected the latest US trade proposal, slamming its terms as “uneconomic” and “unfair,” and vowing retaliatory tariffs in response to new ones just enacted by Washington.
According to Carney, Canada backed away from the negotiations due to terms that would negatively impact net gains for the country. In a bold move, he went so far as to accusing US President Donald Trump of initiating a trade war against the neighbor up north. “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,” Carney stated bluntly.
This collapse in talks paves the way for new U.S. Tariffs-potentially up to 50% on select Canadian goods-to go into effect. These measures reportedly impact around $20 billion in Canadian exports to America, accounting for some 5.5% of Canada’s export landscape.
In a decisive response to safeguard Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses, Carney declared Canada will meet “dollar for dollar” against the new U.S. Tariffs. “Canada will match the U.S.’ new tariffs dollar for dollar,” he announced on X, adding it was a decision firmly in Canada’s “best interests.”
These retaliatory Canadian tariffs are expected to focus on U.S. Steel and dairy and are scheduled to take effect September 8th. Carney teased that more information would be released next week.
On the other side of the border, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer claimed Washington had offered significant cuts on steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber products in exchange for concessions from Canada.
Canada has long been urging the lifting of U.S. Tariffs on auto, steel, and aluminum goods, contending these have placed significant pressure on its economy, impacted jobs, and damaged the ordinarily very strong trade relationship between the two North American neighbors. The White House, in return, has leveled accusations of discriminatory trade practices at Canada, singling out U.S. Alcoholic beverages, automobiles, and dairy products.
Despite the latest breakdown, Trump has publicly spoken of potential progress toward a U.S.- Canada trade agreement, often citing his good relationship with Carney. Yet, with today’s announcement from the Canadian PM, those terms put forth by Washington are clearly non-starters.
