At least 12 people were injured when a three-storey building collapsed early Saturday in Ladakh’s Kargil district. The incident occurred around 3:30 am at Kabaddi Nallah as an earthmover was operating near the building, causing a cave-in, according to police officials.
Among the injured, five, including the earthmover’s driver, were trapped under the debris and subsequently rescued. All injured individuals have been hospitalized and their condition is reported to be stable. Authorities have ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse.
Following the incident, residents of nearby houses were evacuated to safer locations. A prompt rescue operation was launched, involving police, army personnel, and local volunteers. Rescuers worked for about three hours to free the earthmover driver from the machine’s heavily damaged cabin.
The rescue efforts were supervised by Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, and Deputy Commissioner Shrikant Balasaheb Suse. Suse emphasized the seriousness of the incident and assured that those responsible would be held accountable.
Additionally, the administration has decided to establish a committee to inspect buildings in vulnerable areas of the district. This committee will also investigate any violations of building regulations and identify those at fault.
