Comoros-Flagged Oil Tanker Capsizes Near Oman, Crew Includes 13 Indians
- Comoros-flagged oil tanker, Prestige Falcon, capsized near Oman.
- 13 Indian and 3 Sri Lankan crew members onboard.
- Search and rescue operations are underway.
A Comoros-flagged oil tanker named Prestige Falcon, with 13 Indian and 3 Sri Lankan crew members, capsized off the coast of Oman, the country’s Maritime Security Centre announced on Tuesday. The tanker capsized 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah, near the Omani port of Duqm.
The Maritime Security Centre promptly initiated search and rescue operations in collaboration with relevant authorities. They communicated the incident via a post on X, stating, “A Comoros-flagged oil tanker capsized 25 NM southeast of Ras Madrakah. SAR Ops initiated with the relevant authorities.”
The Prestige Falcon was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden, according to shipping data by LSEG. Built in 2007, the 117-metre-long tanker typically handled oil products for short voyages.
This capsizing incident comes in the wake of a previous maritime disaster involving another Comoros-flagged vessel. On November 27, a cargo ship named Raptor, which was carrying 14 crew members, including Indians, sank off the coast of Lesbos island in Greece due to high-speed winds. The Raptor, traveling from Dekheila, Egypt, to Istanbul with a load of salt, sank 4.5 nautical miles southwest of Lesbos.
As the search and rescue operations continue for the Prestige Falcon, concerns for the safety of the crew are paramount. The incident underscores the hazards faced by maritime vessels and the critical need for stringent safety protocols in shipping operations. The maritime community and the families of the crew members await further updates on the situation.
