Strong Critics of Article 370 Were Its Most Vocal Opponents: Dr. Jitendra
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has delivered a resounding critique of Article 370, stating that its most significant abusers were those who championed it. In a comprehensive address, he illuminated the long-standing implications of this controversial article, shedding light on the injustices that have persisted in the region for years.
Exploiting Article 370: Denying the Common Man His Rights
Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized how Article 370 and 35A had been manipulated by political parties, including the Congress and National Conference, to the detriment of the common man. For decades, they denied essential rights like property ownership for women, voting rights for refugees from Pakistan, the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961, and the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006. These actions were taken to appease certain sections of society for political gain, creating an unjust situation.
The Stranglehold of State Assembly Term Extension
One of the key points raised by Dr. Jitendra Singh was the extension of the State Assembly term to six years, which persisted even after the constitution amendment proposed by the Morarji government. This extension, which was justified using Article 370, allowed certain political groups to maintain their hold on power, resulting in an undemocratic stranglehold on the state’s governance.

A Turning Point: Abrogation of Article 370
In a momentous shift, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted how Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s decision to abrogate Article 370 in August 2019 brought redemption to the region. This historic move liberated the people of Jammu and Kashmir and integrated the Union Territories of Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh into the national mainstream. It ushered in equitable resource distribution, socio-economic development, empowerment of the people, and the removal of unjust laws.
He emphasized that more than 800 central laws have been extended to Jammu & Kashmir since it became a Union Territory, fostering comprehensive development. Dr. Jitendra Singh praised Prime Minister Modi for his courage and conviction in rectifying a constitutional anomaly and ensuring the integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the rest of India.
