AAP Leader Sanjay Singh Remanded in ED Custody in Delhi Liquor Policy Case
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh, who was arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, will remain in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) until Friday. Last week, a Delhi Court had granted the Rajya Sabha MP a five-day custody with the probe agency, which has accused him of being a “key conspirator” in the case. The ED has alleged that a businessman had given Rs 2 crore to Mr. Singh, and this amount is part of the money trail in the case.
The agency has also claimed that Sanjay Singh had close ties with several other accused individuals, including businessman Dinesh Arora, who recently became an approver in the case. Sanjay Singh, however, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He was arrested last Wednesday following day-long searches at his residence. He is the second senior AAP leader to be arrested in connection with alleged irregularities in the liquor policy, following the arrest of former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in February.
Manish Sisodia is still in jail and is seeking bail in the Supreme Court, which has posed challenging questions to the ED. Sisodia, who served as the Delhi government’s excise commissioner during the formulation of the 2021 liquor policy (later scrapped), is considered the prime accused in the case. Investigating agencies have referred to him as the “kingpin” and “mastermind.”
The AAP has characterized Sanjay Singh’s arrest as a result of the BJP’s “frustration” with opposition parties coming together under the INDIA bloc in preparation for next year’s general election.
The central investigative agencies allege that liquor companies were involved in shaping the 2021 excise policy, which would have yielded a 12% profit for these firms. They claim that a liquor lobby known as the “South Group” had paid kickbacks for this policy. Of the proposed 12% profit, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) asserts that six percent was funneled to public servants through intermediaries.
