- SCBA emphasizes judiciary’s independence and calls for inquiry into interference.
Pakistan’s apex court’s Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail voiced concern over the government’s alleged inactivity regarding interference in judicial matters, as per Geo News. His remarks came during a hearing led by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, with a six-member bench, discussing the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges’ letter accusing intelligence agencies of meddling.
The IHC judges had demanded a judicial convention on March 25, seeking to address alleged intelligence operatives’ interference that undermined judicial independence. Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Awan indicated the government’s readiness to respond once the order is received, possibly by the following day.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) reinforced the judiciary’s autonomy, urging an inquiry into any interference. The six IHC judges, including Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani and Justice Babar Sattar, sought guidance from the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on intelligence agencies’ meddling in court affairs.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan initiated suo motu proceedings on April 1, forming a seven-member bench led by CJP Isa to address the matter.
