Forest Fire Hampers Air Operations in Uttarakhand
- Thick smoke from forest fire delays Indian Air Force’s aerial firefighting.
- Despite delays, IAF successfully launches Bambi Bucket operations.
- Uttarakhand authorities implement measures, including cloud seeding and bans, to combat forest fires.
T
hick smoke from an intense forest fire shrouded Srinagar in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, causing significant delays in aerial firefighting operations by the Indian Air Force (IAF). Scheduled to commence water-dropping operations at 6:30 am, the IAF’s MI-17 helicopters remained grounded until visibility improved, as reported by Vinay Shankar Pandey, Commissioner of Garhwal.
Despite the delayed start, the IAF successfully launched its firefighting efforts after conditions allowed. The MI-17 V5 helicopters began Bambi Bucket operations in the Pauri Garhwal sector, utilizing over 4500 liters of water to douse the fires in close coordination with the Uttarakhand government.
In response to the ongoing forest fires, the Uttarakhand government has implemented several measures. The Indian Air Force has been called in to aid firefighting efforts, and plans are underway to implement a pilot cloud seeding project to induce rainfall in the affected regions. Additionally, to prevent further incidents, the government has banned the burning of agricultural residues and waste in urban areas.
