- Chairman Khalid Khokhar urges government action, seeks support from civil society and media.
Kissan Ittehad, led by Chairman Khalid Khokhar, has declared nationwide protests set to commence from May 10 in response to Pakistan’s wheat crisis. Khokhar criticized the government’s decision to import wheat instead of sourcing it from local farmers, alleging corruption in the import process and advocating for severe consequences for those involved.
According to Khokhar, the “wheat mafia” reaped significant profits from the imports, while Pakistan incurred substantial losses. Despite increased wheat reserves, local farmers claim they have been deprived of their rightful earnings due to the influx of imported grain.
Expressing frustration over the government’s inaction, Khokhar asserted that thousands of farmers would take to the streets, having exhausted all other avenues for redressal. He called upon various sectors of society, including civic society, media, lawyers, and the business community, to support the farmers’ cause.
Khokhar emphasized the peaceful nature of the protests and vowed to continue until the government commits to procuring wheat from local farmers. With tensions escalating amidst the wheat crisis, the upcoming protests highlight the pressing concerns of Pakistan’s agricultural sector and the urgent need for government intervention.
