Russia Adds Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to Wanted List Amid Ongoing Conflict
Key Highlights:
- Russian Interior Ministry announces Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s addition to Moscow’s ‘wanted criminals’ list.
- Zelenskyy denies the claim, while Ukrainian officials dismiss it as desperation-driven propaganda.
- Former Ukrainian President Poroshenko, Ground Forces Commander Pavliuk, Estonian PM Kallas, and Ukraine’s military intelligence head Budanov also listed.
Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian Interior Ministry declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a new addition to Moscow’s ‘wanted criminals’ list, citing an article of the criminal code. However, Zelenskyy vehemently denied the claim, which Ukrainian officials dismissed as desperation-driven propaganda aimed at garnering attention, according to The New York Times.
Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Ukraine’s Ground Forces Commander, Oleksandr Pavliuk, were also listed alongside Zelenskyy. Additionally, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Ukraine’s military intelligence head Kyrylo Budanov found their names on the ‘wanted’ list, reported The Kyiv Independent.
In response, Ukraine’s foreign ministry emphasized the legitimacy of the arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), contrasting it with what they deemed as worthless Russian announcements. They highlighted that the ICC’s warrant for Putin on war crimes charges is enforceable in 123 countries, as opposed to Russia’s claims.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, in a video address, disclosed at least five assassination attempts since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, underlining the heightened tensions and risks faced by Ukrainian leadership during the conflict.
