Congress Leader Files Petition Against BJP Leaders Over Social Media Post
A Congress leader has filed a petition in a court against BJP National President JP Nadda and the party’s IT cell incharge Amit Malviya over a social media post by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) depicting Rahul Gandhi as ‘a new age Ravan’. In the petition, the general secretary of Congress’ Rajasthan unit, Jaswant Gurjar, has requested the court to register a case against both BJP leaders under sections 499 (false imputation against another person), 500 (defamation), and 504 (intentional insult) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court has scheduled the hearing for the case on October 9.
The controversial poster showed Rahul Gandhi with several heads, and the accompanying BJP post described him as “The new age Ravan,” accusing him of being “evil” and “anti-Dharma.” The Congress has strongly criticized the poster, calling it “unacceptable” and “downright dangerous.” In his petition, Gurjar alleges that the BJP leaders deliberately presented Gandhi as anti-Ram and anti-religion with the intention of harming the goodwill of the Congress and its members and making political gains.
The court has admitted the petition, and the case will proceed with arguments on October 9. This controversy follows critical comments made by financier and philanthropist George Soros, which led to tensions between the BJP and the Congress. Soros had made critical remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prompting a response from the BJP.
The legal action against the BJP leaders highlights the increasing role of social media in political discourse and the potential legal consequences of using digital platforms for political messaging.
