Congress Questions PM Modi’s Stand on Caste Census Data
The Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Bihar, questioning his stance on the caste census data released by the Nitish Kumar government. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused the state of facing widespread unemployment and migration issues.
The Bihar government released the results of its caste census survey in October, revealing that OBCs and EBCs constitute over 63% of the state’s population. Nitish Kumar, now allied with the BJP-led NDA, has faced criticism for his frequent political switches.
PM Modi’s Bihar Campaign Amidst Economic Concerns
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to kickstart the NDA’s election campaign in Bihar. He faces scrutiny over the benefits farmers have seen from the abolition of the Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and the state’s high unemployment and outmigration rates.
Bihar abolished the APMC Act in 2006, which has negatively impacted farmers, leading to significant rural distress. Despite this, the Modi government attempted to replicate this model nationally through controversial farm laws, sparking widespread protests.
Congress Highlights MGNREGA Issues in Bihar
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the Modi government over the faltering implementation of the MGNREGA scheme in Bihar. He pointed out the state’s high unemployment rates, with a significant percentage of youth not engaged in education, employment, or training.
Ramesh highlighted the decline in the number of days of employment provided per household under MGNREGA and the low percentage of families able to access the guaranteed 100 days of employment. The Congress has pledged to address Bihar’s economic challenges through initiatives like filling government vacancies and ensuring the right to apprenticeships.
