Matt Henry Replaces David Willey in IPL 2024 Squad : LSG
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) made a significant announcement on Saturday regarding changes in their squad for the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The team revealed that New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry would be stepping in to replace England all-rounder David Willey, who has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons. This alteration was confirmed via a media statement from the IPL.

Henry’s addition to the squad comes as a notable change, with the Kiwi bowler joining at his base price of INR 1.25 crores. With a formidable track record, Henry has represented New Zealand across various formats, boasting 25 Tests, 82 One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and 17 T20 Internationals to his name. Familiar with the IPL environment, Henry has previously been associated with teams like Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings.
Meanwhile, Willey’s departure marks the end of his stint with LSG, having been initially signed at his base price of Rs 2 crore during last year’s December auction in Dubai. The team’s decision to bring in Henry ahead of their match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) underscores their strategic planning amidst roster adjustments.
Matt Henry Replaces David Willey:Challenges Faced and Strategies Adopted
LSG has encountered various challenges leading up to the IPL 2024 season, with player withdrawals and strategic adjustments impacting their lineup. Earlier in March, the team’s new head coach, Justin Langer, had disclosed in a media interaction that Willey would be absent at the start of the edition. Additionally, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) withdrew Mark Wood from the entire season to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup, prompting the recruitment of West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph as a replacement.
Despite these changes, LSG faced a setback in their opening game against Rajasthan Royals (RR), suffering a 20-run defeat. As of now, led by KL Rahul, LSG finds themselves positioned at the tenth spot in the league standings, yet to secure any points with a net run rate of -1.000. With only one match played thus far, the team aims to regroup, strategize, and bounce back stronger in the upcoming fixtures to make their mark in the IPL 2024 season.
