Six Presumed Dead After Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse in Baltimore
The Maryland state police announced on Wednesday that the six individuals who went missing after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, have been presumed dead. The collapse occurred on Tuesday when a Singapore-flagged vessel collided with one of the bridge’s pillars.
Initially, US President Joe Biden stated that eight people were unaccounted for following the bridge collapse, with two individuals already rescued, and efforts ongoing to locate the remaining six. President Biden assured that the federal government would cover the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge and emphasized support for the people of Baltimore.
The shipping company, Synergy Maritime Group, confirmed that all 22 crew members aboard the vessel were Indian nationals. However, NTSB Chair Homendy mentioned conflicting information about the crew’s nationalities, emphasizing the need for verification.
US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg highlighted the significance of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in American infrastructure and acknowledged the challenging path to recovery. He expressed gratitude for the courageous efforts of first responders.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised the rapid response initiated after the container ship issued a ‘mayday’ call before the collision. This swift action helped prevent further casualties, emphasizing the heroic efforts of those involved in the rescue operation.
