Lok Sabha MP and AIMIM chief, Asaduddin Owaisi, raised serious questions about the fate of 1.5 lakh Muslims excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in Assam after the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Owaisi highlighted the challenges faced by the excluded Muslims, who are now required to prove their citizenship by tracing their ancestry back to 1962 or even 1951 at the Foreigners’ Tribunal. He emphasized the daunting task ahead for these individuals, who must present documents and birth certificates of their grandfathers to fight their cases.

Addressing a public gathering in Hyderabad, Owaisi warned that despite assurances from the BJP-led government that resident Muslims would not be affected by the CAA, the unfolding situation indicates otherwise. He emphasized the inevitability of repercussions over time.

“They (BJP) are saying nothing is going to happen immediately. I want to tell them, that it takes time for things to unfold,” Owaisi remarked, citing Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s repeated mentions of the NRC and National Population Register (NPR) alongside the CAA.

Owaisi pointed to the Assam NRC exercise, where a significant number of individuals, including Hindus and Muslims, were excluded from the final list despite the government spending Rs 1,600 crore on the process.

While expressing openness to granting citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries, Owaisi stressed that the process should not discriminate based on religion. He urged the government to grant citizenship to individuals from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh based on humanitarian grounds rather than religious criteria.

The Union Home Ministry’s notification of CAA implementation rules, just days before the Lok Sabha elections schedule announcement, underscores the urgency surrounding the controversial law. The CAA aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
