Over 800 Arrested in Assam’s Fight Against Child Marriages
In a determined effort to combat the deeply rooted issue of child marriages in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that more than 800 individuals have been arrested in the second phase of a state-wide crackdown. This operation follows the initial phase earlier this year, during which thousands of arrests were made across the state.
Steadfast Action Against Child Marriage
The Assam Police initiated a special operation in the early hours, resulting in the apprehension of over 800 individuals involved in child marriages. Chief Minister Sarma affirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating this social menace and highlighted that the number of arrests may continue to increase as the operation remains ongoing.
A Persistent Issue: Thousands Arrested Over Five Years
Chief Minister Sarma had previously addressed the Assam Assembly on September 11, revealing that a total of 3,907 individuals had been arrested in connection with child marriages over the last five years. Of these, 3,319 are facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO). This disclosure underscores the gravity of the issue and the state’s unwavering determination to bring those responsible to justice.
The crackdown against child marriages in Assam represents a significant step towards protecting the rights and well-being of children, ensuring their safe and healthy development. The government’s resolute actions send a clear message that such practices will not be tolerated, and the perpetrators will be held accountable.
