    Major global peers displayed mixed trends as investors awaited crucial economic data, including US inflation data on Tuesday, British inflation data, and eurozone GDP on Wednesday. While most major Asian markets were closed for holidays, European markets showed a mixed performance at the time of Sensex closing.


    Indian Indices Witness Decline

    Nifty 50 closed 166 points lower at 21,616.05, reflecting a 0.76% decline, while the Sensex fell 523 points, marking a 0.73% decrease, closing at 71,072.49. The decline was influenced by notable drags from ICICI Bank, ITC, HDFC Bank, and SBI.


    Deeper Losses in Mid and Smallcap Indices

    The midcap index on BSE experienced a significant decline of 2.62%, and the smallcap index nosedived by 3.16%. These deeper losses in mid and smallcap segments added to the overall negative sentiment in the market.


    Market Capitalization Drops

    The overall market capitalization (mcap) of BSE-listed firms witnessed a notable drop, falling from nearly ₹386.4 lakh crore in the previous session to approximately ₹379 lakh crore. This single-session decline resulted in investors collectively losing about ₹7.4 lakh crore.
