Uttarakhand Assembly to Discuss Uniform Civil Code Draft

The Uttarakhand Assembly is set to discuss the final draft of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) today, following its approval by the state cabinet. If passed, Uttarakhand would become the first state post-Independence to adopt the UCC, marking a significant step toward a common set of laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of religion, in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

Key Provisions in the Draft Bill

The draft bill includes provisions for a complete ban on polygamy, registration of relationships for live-in couples, adoption rights for everyone, and equal inheritance rights for both sons and daughters. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for a Uniform Civil Code, emphasizing the need for a unified legal framework in the country.

    Committee’s Work and Public Engagement

The draft was prepared by a committee set up by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, which engaged with citizens and stakeholders, garnering feedback from over 2 lakh people. Chief Minister Dhami aims to set an example for other states, encouraging them to adopt the UCC based on Uttarakhand’s template.
