Rameswaram Fishermen Announce Symbolic Strike and Grievances
In a bold move to draw attention to their longstanding grievances, Rameswaram fishermen have declared a symbolic strike”>strike and outlined a series of demands addressing the challenges they face. The decision was made during a consultative meeting of the Rameswaram All Boats Fishermen’s Association, emphasizing the recurrent issue of boat captures by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Boat Captures by Sri Lankan Navy
Over 150 mechanized boats from Tamil Nadu seized by the Sri Lankan Navy between 2018 and 2024 remain in the possession of the Sri Lankan government. The fishermen urged immediate intervention from both the central and state governments to secure the release and restoration of seized boats in good condition. They also demanded adequate compensation for damaged vessels and permission for rescue teams to retrieve boats held by the Sri Lankan Navy.
Urgent Appeals for Fisherman Nambumurugan’s Release
The meeting addressed the capture of fisherman Nambumurugan, sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Sri Lankan Navy. Fishermen appealed for his release on compassionate grounds and urged government support for his family. A unanimous resolution was passed, emphasizing his immediate release on compassionate grounds and the need for government assistance for his family.
Symbolic Strike”>Strike and Voter ID Card Return
In response to perceived lack of progress, the fishermen announced a one-day symbolic strike”>strike scheduled for February 5, 2024. This aims to compel authorities to address their demands before the upcoming parliamentary elections. Additionally, fishermen decided to return their voter ID cards to the central government in case of any delay in resolving grievances and announced plans to boycott the parliamentary election.
The fishermen’s decisive actions underscore the urgency of resolving critical issues affecting their livelihoods and call for swift government intervention.
