The governments of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have formalized their commitment to the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP) by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat presided over the signing ceremony on Sunday. The ERCP aims to address drinking water and irrigation needs in 13 districts of Rajasthan, marking a significant development in regional economic conditions.

During a media briefing on Monday, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted the significance of the ERCP MoU. He announced the removal of bottlenecks and emphasized the positive impact the project would have on providing drinking water and supporting agriculture in the region. Taking a dig at the previous Congress government, Shekhawat criticized the politicization of water-related issues and hailed the signing of the MoU as a golden moment for both states.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister’s Visit to Jaipur

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Jaipur on Sunday to engage in discussions with his Rajasthan counterpart, Bhajanlal Sharma, regarding the ERCP. In a joint press conference, the chief ministers expressed their commitment to resolving drinking and irrigation water challenges faced by the people.

Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project Overview

The ERCP, announced in the state budget of 2017-18, is a comprehensive drinking and irrigation water initiative. The project targets 13 districts, including Jhalawar, Baran, Kota Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Tok, Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, Alwar, Bharatpur, and Dholpur. Led by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Ministry of Jal Shakti engaged in consensus-building efforts over the past few years to align both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in implementing this vital project.
