DRI in New Delhi seizes 16.67 kg of gold and 39.73 kg of silver, collectively valued at over Rs 10 crore
In an ongoing effort to combat gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted seven consignments of “Electric Current/Potential Meters” at the Foreign Post Office in New Delhi. These shipments, declared as “Current Guiaor Machine,” arrived from Hong Kong on Sunday. The Ministry of Finance revealed that a total of 56 electric meters were imported, and upon examination, the authorities discovered an elaborate smuggling operation.
Unusual Technique Unveiled: Gold and Silver Alloy Concealed in Functional Electric Meters
The smugglers ingeniously concealed 16.67 kg of gold and 39.73 kg of silver, with an estimated market value of Rs. 10.66 crore, within the functional electric meters. The outer covers of these meters, initially appearing as ordinary steel, were painted black to divert suspicion. However, upon scratching the paint, a white-colored metal alloy of gold and silver in a 30:70 ratio was exposed. This discovery suggests the involvement of a well-organized syndicate employing sophisticated techniques to disguise the precious metals.
Ongoing Investigation into Organized Gold Smuggling Syndicate
Preliminary findings indicate that the syndicate strategically altered the appearance of gold by alloying it with silver, changing its color from yellow to white. The disguised alloy was then utilized to manufacture electric meter covers, providing an unsuspecting facade for their smuggling operation. The authorities are actively engaged in further investigations to unveil the full extent of this organized gold smuggling network.
