20 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Workers Arrested Days Before General Elections
In the run-up to Pakistan’s general election on February 8, the Karachi police arrested approximately 20 workers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The incident occurred as major political parties organized rallies across the country, with PTI workers reportedly facing police intervention during their political gathering. PTI shared videos on social media, depicting party members being dragged, assaulted, and dispersed by police personnel. PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan condemned the arrests, emphasizing the constitutional right of citizens to hold peaceful rallies during election campaigns.
Police Action Sparks Criticism and Condemnation
Amidst the arrests, PTI leader Hammad Azhar expressed concern over the detention of his 82-year-old father, a former Governor of Punjab. Azhar decried the situation, describing Pakistan as a “total fascist state” with diminishing human rights and the rule of law. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Asad Raza defended the action, citing the absence of a no-objection certificate as the reason for police intervention.
Challenges to Democratic Principles
The arrests and confrontations highlight challenges to democratic principles as political tensions escalate ahead of the general election. The incident underscores the importance of safeguarding citizens’ rights to engage in peaceful political activities during the electoral process.
