Extreme Cold Grips Ooty in Southern India as Mercury Drops Below 2.5°C
While North India experiences bitter cold, Ooty in the south witnessed temperatures dipping below 2.5°C with a relative humidity of 65 percent. The hilly district of Nilgiri, including Ooty, faced frost, a phenomenon common from November to February but delayed this year due to stormy rains. Areas like Kanthal, Pinker Post, and Thalai Kunta observed icy plains, disrupting normal life. Locals, unaccustomed to such low temperatures, sought warmth indoors, and white frost covered grasslands, creating a picturesque scene. The cold spell impacted daily activities, and residents grappled with issues like starting frozen cars.
Delayed Frost in Nilgiri District
Frost in Nilgiri usually occurs annually from November to February, but this year, it started late in January due to stormy rains. The delay in the onset of frost led to a significant drop in temperatures in the popular hill station of Ooty and its surrounding areas.
Residents Face Disruptions
The severe cold caused by frost disrupted normal lives, forcing many people to stay indoors in the morning. Residents gathered around bonfires to stay warm. Vehicles were covered with up to an inch of ice, causing difficulties for residents trying to start their cars. Large grassland areas in the Nilgiris district appeared like a wonderland, adorned with white frost.
Weather Variations in Recent Weeks
Local meteorological officials reported significant variations in day and night temperatures in recent weeks, with daytime temperatures hovering above 25 degrees Celsius. The sudden drop in temperatures and the picturesque frost-covered landscapes created a unique weather experience for the residents of Ooty.
