French Woman Sentenced to Prison for Abandoning 9-Year-Old Son for Two Years
A 39-year-old woman in France, identified as Alexandra, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for abandoning her 9-year-old son, leaving him to live alone in their family’s apartment from 2020 to 2022. Shockingly, the boy survived on cake, canned goods, and stolen tomatoes, often without heating or electricity. Alexandra lived with her partner in another apartment 5 kilometers away and only visited the child sporadically.
Neglect Uncovered: Mayor Alerts Authorities to Disturbing Situation
The Mayor of Nersac, where the boy resided, revealed that despite lacking hot water or heating, the child attended school regularly and maintained good academic performance. The neglect came to light when Alexandra approached social services for financial assistance to buy food. The Mayor, Barbara Couturier, became suspicious, connected the dots, and promptly alerted local and national police.
Legal Consequences: 18-Month Sentence, With 12 Months Suspended
The court sentenced Alexandra to 18 months in prison, with 12 months suspended. She will serve the remaining six months under home confinement. Despite the mother’s defense that she lived with her son, evidence from neighbors and mobile data contradicted her claims. The child had been under the care of social services since September 19, 2022. The case highlights the boy’s ability to care for himself, which contributed to authorities remaining unaware of the neglect. Neighbors expressed guilt for not intervening sooner, citing modern life’s privacy as a factor that helped conceal the mother’s actions.
