
2019 Easter Bombings: Sri Lanka’s Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala Links Ex-Intelligence Chief Suresh Sallay
COLOMBO, JUNE 10, 2026 [VoM News]: In a major revelation, the Sri Lankan government has disclosed important details regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that killed 279 people and injured hundreds more. For the first time, the Sri Lankan government has directly linked former intelligence chief Major General Suresh Sallay to the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings.
Ananda Wijepala, who heads the Public Security Department, informed Parliament that coordinated investigations revealed that Sallay played a strategic role in planning the attacks by coordinating with Islamic extremists.
According to the minister, Sallay met individuals linked to the attackers weeks before the bombings took place. It was further revealed that details regarding the targets and congregations were gathered, leading to the island nation’s deadliest terror incident.

Earlier this year, Sallay was arrested under anti-terror laws. He had earlier headed military intelligence and also served as chief of the State Intelligence Service (SIS). Authorities stated that the matter remains under investigation.
So far, Sallay’s legal team has denied all accusations, leading to political controversy and unrest.
However, questions have also been raised regarding former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who came to power months after the bombings. Authorities have reportedly secured court orders preventing the former president from leaving the country.
