Kuno National Park Welcomes New Cheetah Cubs
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that a Namibian cheetah named Jwala has given birth to three cubs in the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This joyous occasion follows closely after another Namibian cheetah, Aasha, also gave birth to cubs. The birth of these cubs is a positive development for ‘Project Cheetah,’ which aims to reintroduce cheetahs to India.
However, the news comes on the heels of a setback, as another Namibian cheetah named Shaurya passed away on January 16 in Kuno National Park. The cheetah exhibited signs of incoordination and a staggering gait, prompting immediate medical intervention. Despite efforts to revive the cheetah, it developed post-revival complications leading to its demise.
‘Project Cheetah’ involves the translocation of cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa to reintroduce the species to India, where they have been extinct for several decades. The project aims to bolster the cheetah population and contribute to the conservation of biodiversity in the country.
The birth of the new cubs is seen as a positive step in the ongoing efforts to reestablish the cheetah population in India and underscores the significance of conservation initiatives for the country’s wildlife.
