China Urges Separation of Boundary Issue from Bilateral Ties with India
China emphasized that the settlement process of the boundary issue should not impact normal development in its ties with India, including trade relations.
Responding to a reported remark by an Indian official at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos about potential changes in India’s investment rules for China once the border situation stabilizes, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated, “The settlement process should not influence the normal development of our bilateral relationship.”
While acknowledging the stability of the situation on the China-India border, Mao reiterated China’s stance on the historic boundary issue.
The India-China relationship has faced challenges since May 2020, marked by a military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.
The tensions escalated with a deadly clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020.
Despite the border tensions, China highlighted the resilience and potential of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.
The two-way trade volume has exceeded USD 100 billion annually, demonstrating the economic cooperation’s win-win nature.
China urged India to provide a fair, just, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies investing and operating in India.
The latest annual trade data reveals that India-China trade reached a record USD 136.2 billion in 2023.
