The extended dry winter season in Kashmir is having a significant impact on the film industry, leading to the postponement of numerous films, including Bollywood productions, promotional shoots, and wedding films.

For years, the winter charm of Kashmir, with its pristine snow-covered landscapes, has been a highly sought-after backdrop for Bollywood and pre-wedding shoots. The majority of films in recent years have been shot during the winter season in Kashmir, capitalizing on the valley’s enchanting beauty, especially after a snowfall.

However, this winter has deviated from the norm, as the region grapples with an unexpected lack of snowfall. This has resulted in the deferment of many film shoots, predominantly those in the Bollywood, pre-wedding, and promotional genres.

Danish Khan, a line producer for Bollywood films in Kashmir, expressed that several scheduled shoots have been delayed due to the absence of snow this winter. He mentioned the increased inquiries from Bollywood filmmakers concerned about the weather situation in Kashmir, as shoots that rely on snowy landscapes are either canceled or postponed.

Khan, who operates the production company ‘Hamiasto Productions,’ revealed that out of his three planned projects for the winter season, two had to be relocated to other destinations. He emphasized the significance of winter beauty in the revival of the film industry in Kashmir and expressed the hope for snowfall to ensure uninterrupted shooting.

Peer Idrees, the production manager of ‘Hamiasto Productions,’ pointed out that the dry rivers in Kashmir also contribute to the challenges faced in film shooting. Some filmmakers have opted to shift their film productions to Russia to capture snow sequences, as the flowing rivers with snow-capped mountains in the background provide an ideal setting for Bollywood movies.

Local filmmakers, who traditionally plan their schedules around the captivating snow-covered scenery, find themselves in an unprecedented dilemma. Mian Imad, a renowned filmmaker and photographer known as Imad Clicks, shared that three music videos and two pre-wedding shoots he had scheduled were canceled due to the ongoing dry spell, significantly impacting the work of local filmmakers in the region.
