India Breaks Ground on First Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat.

India Breaks Ground on First Semiconductor Plant in Gujarat.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, made a significant announcement on Saturday, revealing that the “Bhoomi Pujan” or groundbreaking ceremony for India’s inaugural semiconductor plant has taken place in Gujarat. This momentous event not only signifies a new era in India’s technological landscape but also embodies Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a self-reliant India. Mr. Vaishnaw expressed unwavering confidence that the construction of this semiconductor plant would reach completion expeditiously, with the first indigenous microchips anticipated to be produced by December 2024.

A Milestone in India’s Technological Advancement.

“Today ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ of the first semiconductor plant was conducted. This is an important step in carrying forward the PM’s vision (of Atmanirbhar Bharat). The construction of the plant will be completed soon, and the first indigenous microchips will roll out from here by December 2024,” Mr. Vaishnaw declared.

He further underscored the remarkable progress achieved in India’s electronic industry under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, stating, “In 2014, the manufacturing cost of mobile phones in India was Rs 17,000 crores. This has now soared to Rs 3,65,000 crores. The electronics industry, once valued at Rs 1,90,000 crores, has expanded to be worth Rs 8,30,000 crores.” Additionally, he noted that exports had increased fivefold, rising from Rs 40,000 crores to Rs 2,00,000 crores.

Semiconductor Chips: India’s Technological Backbone

Mr. Vaishnaw emphasized that all these advancements could be attributed to semiconductor chips, which are pivotal to India’s aspiration to become a major semiconductor hub. The semiconductor mission, initiated in December 2021, has a strategic goal of positioning India as a key player in semiconductor technology globally.

In alignment with this vision, on June 22, global semiconductor giant Micron made a substantial commitment by announcing plans to invest USD 825 million in constructing a new assembly and test facility in Gujarat. Situated within the Sanand Industrial Park, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), this facility is well-placed to meet both domestic and international demands, capitalizing on Gujarat’s robust manufacturing infrastructure, favorable business environment, and skilled talent pool.

Strengthening India’s Self-Reliance in Semiconductors

This development not only underscores India’s dedication to self-reliance but also reinforces its growing significance in the global semiconductor arena. It aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of fostering a technologically advanced and self-sufficient India.
