NIA Raids 32 Locations to Dismantle Terrorist-Crime Nexus

In a significant move against the terrorist-gangster-drug smuggler nexus, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted searches at 32 locations in Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab. The anti-terror agency, in coordination with state police forces, targeted members associated with the organized terror-crime syndicate led by Lawrence Bishnoi.

Jhajjar and Sonipat in Haryana were among the locations raided. The operations followed the attachment of four properties owned by Lawrence Bishnoi on January 6, as the NIA found them to be “proceeds of terrorism” used for hatching terror conspiracies and executing serious crimes. The attached properties included locations in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and Fazilka, Punjab.

One of the properties, a Fortuner car registered in the name of Joginder Singh from Haryana, was also seized. Joginder Singh, the father of gangster Kala Rana and a close associate of Lawrence Bishnoi, facilitated the transportation of arms and ammunition for promoting terrorist acts.

The NIA’s investigations revealed that Vikas Singh, an associate of Lawrence Bishnoi, harbored terrorists involved in a Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) attack on Punjab Police Headquarters. The property belonging to accused Dalip Kumar was used as a shelter and warehouse for storing weapons and harboring terrorist gang members.

The NIA had registered a case against the organized crime syndicate of Lawrence Bishnoi and associates in August 2022. The syndicate, involved in sensational crimes, extortions, and terror conspiracies, operated across multiple states. Investigations indicated that many of these activities were masterminded from abroad, including Pakistan and Canada, or by leaders of organized terror syndicates operating from Indian prisons.

In its efforts to disrupt and dismantle such networks, the NIA has adopted targeted strategies, including the attachment and seizure of properties derived from the “proceeds of terrorism.” The recent raids form part of these ongoing initiatives to combat the complex nexus between terrorism and organized crime.
