Maldives Witnesses Surge in Tourist Arrivals Despite Controversy
In a notable resurgence post-global travel disruptions, the Maldives experienced a 12.6% increase in tourist arrivals in 2023, totaling 1,757,939 by December 13. Indian visitors took the lead with 209,198 arrivals, closely followed by Russia at 209,146 and China with 187,118 arrivals. Several other countries like the UK, Germany, Italy, the US, France, Spain, and Switzerland also contributed significantly to the inflow of tourists.
Aviation statistics revealed a growing affinity for the Maldives among Indian tourists. Direct flight passengers soared from 51,000 in the October-December quarter of 2018 to a staggering 1.15 lakh in the same period of 2021. Despite a minor decline in 2022, the allure of the Maldives remained strong, drawing Indian travelers with its pristine beaches and luxurious resorts.
However, the serene image of the Maldives faced a recent hiccup. Certain anti-India remarks made by a few Maldivians, including a government official, triggered calls from Indian celebrities and social media influencers for a boycott of the island nation. This controversy coincided with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. Images of Modi snorkeling amidst the vibrant marine life of the archipelago gained massive attention, renewing interest in the Indian destination.
