Karnataka CM Agrees to Honorarium-Increase for Guest Lecturers Amid Strike
During a meeting with representatives of protesting guest lecturers, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced an increase in the honorarium for these educators. The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s concern for guest lecturers and acknowledged their demands. He urged them to end their strike immediately and resume their duties.
Siddaramaiah, recalling his advocacy for guest lecturers even during his tenure as the leader of the opposition party, stated that the government has proposed a salary hike within two years. Despite legal complexities preventing job security, he assured the lecturers that their demands were being considered sympathetically.
The proposed honorarium increase is as follows: ₹5,000 for those with less than five years of service, ₹6,000 for those with 5 to 10 years, ₹7,000 for those with 10 to 15 years, and ₹8,000 for those with more than 15 years of service. Additionally, the Chief Minister agreed to implement health insurance of ₹5 lakh per annum for guest lecturers, providing a one-time payment of ₹5 lakh to serving lecturers after reaching 60 years of age.
Acknowledging the workload, the government agreed to grant one day of paid leave per month to those with more than 15 hours of weekly workload. Furthermore, a three-month paid maternity leave for guest lecturers was assured. Experience-based weightage in recruitment and simplified counseling processes were also promised. The CM expressed the intention to allow guest lecturers to continue their service at the same location for the next year if the workload persists.
The meeting, attended by Higher Education Minister Dr M.C. Sudhakar, Chief Minister’s Political Secretary K. Govindaraju, and other senior officers, marked a significant step towards addressing the concerns of guest lecturers in Karnataka.
