ED Names Former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel in Chargesheet Alleging Bribery Involvement
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary chargesheet on January 1, 2024, naming former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel. The charges pertain to accusations of receiving bribes amounting to around Rs 508 crore from Mahadev App promoters.
The ED’s chargesheet highlights startling revelations made by Subham Soni, the Mahadev App promoter and accused individual, during the investigation. It implicates several other individuals, including Subham Soni, Anil Kumar Agrawal alias Atul Agrawal, Rohit Gulati, Bhim Singh Yadav, and Asim Das.
This supplementary chargesheet was presented before the special court for PMLA cases in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. As per the ED, Asim Das disclosed that Subham Soni instructed him to deliver a significant cash amount to Bhupesh Baghel during Das’s visit to Dubai on October 25, 2023.
Further substantiating these claims, a voice message retrieved from Das’s phone allegedly includes instructions from Soni to deliver 8-10 crore rupees to Baghel upon Das’s return to India. The ED’s investigation also revealed the interception of Das on November 2, 2023, with seized cash amounting to Rs 5.39 crore from his premises, supposedly intended for Baghel.
According to ED statements, this cash movement was part of Mahadev App promoters’ efforts to deliver money to a specific Chhattisgarh politician. Das admitted to being tasked by Subham Soni to deliver the cash to Bhupesh Baghel.
Email correspondences of Subham Soni and testimonies from witnesses, such as Chandrabhushan Verma, suggest that Bhim Singh Yadav played a role as a conduit for Mahadev Online Book in facilitating “liaisoning money.”
Chandrabhushan Verma’s previous statement recorded under section 50 of PMLA, 2002, had disclosed Bhim Singh Yadav’s involvement in handling the “liaisoning money” for Mahadev Online Book.
