Amidst ongoing investigations into the alleged ration scam in West Bengal, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has made another arrest, detaining former Bongaon municipality chairman Shankar Adhya in connection with the case. The arrest follows the apprehension of Trinamool Congress minister Jyotipriya Mullick earlier in relation to the same matter.

A recent statement from the ED detailed an attack on its team, accompanied by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officers, by a group of around 800-1,000 individuals in Sandeshkhali. The mob, purportedly supporters of Trinamool leader Shah Jahan Sheikh, reportedly wielded weapons such as lathis, stones, and bricks with an intent to cause harm.

Shankar Adhya, the apprehended Trinamool leader, has been brought to the ED’s regional headquarters in Salt Lake, Kolkata. His medical examination is scheduled for today before presenting him in court.

Governor CV Anand condemned the incident, describing it as “alarming and deplorable.” He emphasized the government’s responsibility to curb such acts of violence in a democracy.

The altercation between the Bengal government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the ED has intensified, leading to significant friction. The attack on ED officers prompted Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar to urge Home Minister Amit Shah for an NIA investigation into the matter.

In response, BJP’s Suvendu Adhukari, the Leader of Opposition in Bengal, directly criticized Mamata Banerjee, alleging a deterioration in law and order, and highlighting the role of individuals like Sheikh Shahjahan, purportedly associated with criminal activities.

The severity of the situation forced ED officers to abandon their vehicles and seek safety via autorickshaws and two-wheelers, raising serious concerns over the prevailing law and order in West Bengal.
